Responsible Gaming

Remember: gambling should be fun and is a form of entertainment. You should not gamble to cover other expenses in your life or as a way of escaping from other problems in your daily life.

When gambling is no longer fun, it is time to stop!

  • Understand the game you choose to bet money on,
  • Only gamble with money you can afford to lose,
  • Understand that there is a risk you will lose the money you bet,
  • Gambling is not an investment – it is entertainment.
  • Take breaks,
  • Remember that there are many other things you can spend your time on.

Minors must not participate in gambling. As well as it being illegal to offer gambling to minors, research also shows that exposure at an early age can have negative consequences later in life.

Possible Consequences of Compulsive Gambling (Gambling Addiction)

There are varying degrees of so-called problem gambling, which can ultimately lead to gambling addiction, also known as compulsive gambling.

In mild cases, this may result in you spending a little more – or a lot more – than you originally intended on one or two occasions, meaning that it has a short-term financial impact on you or that you miss out on other events in your life because you spent your time gambling.

In more severe cases of problem gambling and compulsive gambling, the damage can affect you, your family and your friends. A gambling addict is at risk of making choices that can have major consequences for their finances and ultimately harm their family and relationships with friends.

As well as your finances, your physical and mental health can also suffer as a result of problem gambling.

Compulsive gambling can have many serious consequences, both for the gambler and their loved ones. For every compulsive gambler, there are 8–10 people whose lives are affected by it. The compulsive gambler spends a great deal of time and mental energy on gambling and planning their gambling. This takes a heavy toll on other important aspects of life such as education, work and leisure interests. For example, the compulsive gambler might spend the night in front of the computer instead of sleeping. Gambling problems also often affect relationships with friends, partners and other relatives. Compulsive gambling can also have financial consequences, which can lead to debt and financial crime. Test yourself!

If you ever find yourself feeling that you"ve spent more money on gambling than you actually intended, or spent too much of your day gambling, it might be a good idea to take a test that can give you an idea of whether you have, or are developing, a problem.

The Danish Gambling Authority has developed a test to help gamblers realise whether they should seek help.

You can find the test here .

Please note that this test and the results cannot replace a professional assessment or be used to make a diagnosis on their own.

The development of gambling problems and gambling addiction is a process, and the test can give you an indication of whether your gambling has become problematic.

The test results will not be shared with Merkur Bets.
